Monocles were introduced by the German Baron Philip Von Stosch around 1720. It would seem that there was an evolution from the magnifier to the quizzer and then to the monocle. All true monocles have extension galleries which were normally made from a custom mold. This make them very comfortable to wear. Quizzing glasses are either missed called magnifiers or monocles. Some people used them as monocles even if they had a handle. It is speculated that quizzers lead to the development of scissors glasses.
