Lorgnettes have a handle off to the side. In 1825 Robert Bate added the ability to fold both lenses together forming a single eyeglass. Most lorgnettes were quite decorative and very expensive in their time. A more inexpensive model of these were made without the handle and became known as Oxfords which in turn were similar to pince-nez style glasses.
